Court Etiquette

Just a reminder, our parties provide a fun and relaxing atmosphere, where players can have friendly competition. We simply ask attendees to follow these guidelines:

1. Introduce yourself to the new players on the court. This will make for a more wholesome experience.

2. Be cordial to your partners and opponents.

3. Refrain from giving instructions to anyone on the court unless they request them.

4. Do not gun for the person at the net with fast and hard hitting especially in mixed doubles.

5. Kindly pick up the balls for the server. It saves time and is just good etiquette.

6. When yo leave the court, please find the 3 balls you played with and leave them for the next group of players.

7. Do not call a ball out when you or your partner are unsure about a line call. It is unsportsmanlike and can stir unpleasant reactions.
Check USTA or other tennis websites for the official rules.

8. If you are scheduled to play the next hour, do not take more than a 10-minute break. There are players who play only 2 hours and could use the complete playtime.

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | March 17 – 23, 2014

My sign-off “Look forward to seeing old and new friends” rings true. This and last week two old-timers attended, only to be joined by 3 other friends from 15-20 years ago. When two players from Ramsey arrived and saw their friends from Franklin Lakes and Wayne, they were quite surprised. An hour or two later a regular on the DL (disabled list) stopped by to say hello, as he can’t seem to stay away from the courts. He was also very surprised to see everyone in their old group here, one big unintended but happy reunion.

Here’s a picture of something to remind us what mother nature has impressed upon us this winter, lots of snow. One player was finally able to overcome the stubborn snow with the help of a shovel and warm weather 2 weeks ago…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | March 3 – 9, 2014

On Friday night I paired up co-workers from Morris Plains and Wharton to play with two brothers from Garfield. I told them that whatever they did wrong to the Garfield player, his older brother will take care of them good on the court. The player from Leonia clarified it for me – “It’s called ‘Gotcha!’ tennis.” I’m sure it was a fun hour.
