We are still alive!
Tennis Anyone?

Order!
Order!
Indoor tennis is in order!

As evening temperature is falling, it’s perfect time to too cold for comfort (30’s tonight). I’m looking forward to seeing my “winter” and non-winter friends.

Thanks for making last Sunday at Packanack a memorable one. Everyone said Dwight did a great job!

Just a few highlights from the more recent tennis parties…

My greatest satisfaction at the parties is seeing players enjoy themselves on and off the court. NY/NJ is truly a melting pot of cultures and people from all walks of life. Players from different parts of the world and backgrounds gather here week after week to enjoy one common sport – tennis. Some made lifelong connections and others for weekly enjoyment while here. I hope to make notes and report some of those meetings that I tirelessly find interesting.

FRIDAY & SATURDAY

I’ve always admired people with wisdom, good writhing and witty lines. Two old-timers made their returns for the past couple of months. Two Fridays ago during their warm-down period after their 2-3 hours of play, the two watched the match on Court 1 at Tiger. Spectator from Ramsey said – “Dwight made a good “shoestring shot” (?). Then the spectator from Glen Ridge explained to me it is term often used in baseball when someone makes a good catch at the feet and make a good throw or something. (I need to write things down.) Both spectators are long-time players and have great volley skills. One calls Dwight the Drop Shot Maker and the other said “Dwight hits awesome drop shots and amazing volleys. He’s just that good.” – which gives me a different/deeper view of Dwight’s ability. This is by no means a tribute to Dwight, though it wound up a little that way, just talking about 2 old-timers, or now 3. Then they went on to talk more things so interesting to me….

This past Saturday a player from the Netherlands came back for a visit and said she’ll be moving back shortly. A writer of some sort, she had a great career that brought her abroad and never fails to give me exciting updates when she arrives. She tells of the wonders of the Netherlands which I’ve heard and read, especially about American ex-pats especially with young children who get to enjoy the interesting school system where there are no grades, just learning. (Hope my summary does it justice.) Before she bode farewell she said have you met the Ralph Lauren model? He’s here playing! Yes, he took her breath away. But here we call him Federer Look-Alike.

A group of friends from NY have found their way to Saturday night parties. Their group leader keeps introducing yet another player each week. That’s quite a group they have! Hope they’ll continue to enjoy their tennis with us, as it’s been great having them part of the mix.

All other parties were fun!

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | April 10 – 16, 2017

It’s been a great winter season with many old and new friends gathering for winter fun. It seems we’ve many more newcomers this year. It must be that every 10 years there’s a new wave. I’m especially proud of the upsurge of new interest where more beginners have been practicing here throughout the winter.
