Court Etiquette

Just a reminder, our parties provide a fun and relaxing atmosphere, where players can have friendly competition. We simply ask attendees to follow these guidelines:

1. Introduce yourself to the new players on the court. This will make for a more wholesome experience.

2. Be cordial to your partners and opponents.

3. Refrain from giving instructions to anyone on the court unless they request them.

4. Do not gun for the person at the net with fast and hard hitting especially in mixed doubles.

5. Kindly pick up the balls for the server. It saves time and is just good etiquette.

6. When you leave the court, please find the 3 balls you played with and leave them for the next group of players.

7. Do not call a ball out when you or your partner are unsure about a line call. It is unsportsmanlike and can stir unpleasant reactions.
Check USTA or other tennis websites for the official rules.

8. If you are scheduled to play the next hour, do not take more than a 10-minute break. There are players who play only 2 hours and could use the complete playtime.

My partner from Hoboken used the phrase “flies like a butterfly but stings like a bee” and the opponent from Budd Lake said that the shot was “packed with a lot of punch.”

While weeknight tennis is smaller group than the weekend parties, it gives me a chance to get to know players better. This Wednesday I got to watch players on the court play for a few minutes. Because I know everyone well enough, I started to cheer for the underdogs – “You almost got it!,” hoping that it wouldn’t offend the opponents…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | April 8 – 14, 2013

An avid player introduced a newcomer to the group last week and one more this week. I was more excited that the newcomer is a professor of psychology than a tennis player, feeding my interest in people and human psychology. A player from Guttenberg jokingly said I should be happy and I should set up an appointment with him. I kidded back – Well at least I won’t have to pay for the session if I can get him to come back to the parties…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | March 25 – 31, 2013

It’s that time of year, at the first sign of spring (though you couldn’t tell by the weather) when New Englanders have made it through the harshness of the winter and decided that it’s time to take vacation. While many went away, almost as many, or it seemed, flocked to the tennis parties for their mini getaways…
