LAST WEEK’S RECAP | June 7 – 14, 2015

FRIDAY
Granted it was warm last Friday, many showed up to play making it look almost like a winter Friday night tennis party. It was good to see old friends from all over the map including Cedar Knoll, Chatham, Hoboken, Mahwah, Teaneck and South Orange. Player from Cedar Knoll who doesn’t normally stay after the game even stayed to chat with other players as she was having such a nice time. She said it was good to sit since she was tired from the games. In the last hour several players watched players on show court. The player from Mahwah enjoy herself, which made us enjoy watching even more.

A player from Hoboken forgot his racquet and asked me the next day if I saw it. I said certainly, the racquet which he coins “Lady In Red” was a nice red with a tint of black and a blue shock absorber with a smiley face on one side and a frown face on the other to what kind of day a player is having. Does anybody else have a name for their racquet?

SUNDAY
Several non-regulars made it out to the Sunday party for the first time this season. Even my doctor Dr. Dee Amin from Union City made it out and totally enjoyed himself. He must have been glad too that I didn’t have medical questions for him as I usually do when I see him at the parties. Thanks to him I no longer fainting spells from anemia (3 years ago), have stomach pains from an ulcer (a year ago) nor any bacterial infection (2 weeks ago). It’s nice to have someone I can trust and finally be healthy for a change, for now, that is….

A player who was a regular about 4-5 years ago has recently moved from Pearl River to Wayne. He plans on joining regularly again as he loves tennis and the clay!

A player from Clifton comes because his doctor told him he needs to get regular exercise. Tennis is definitely good for that.

A recent newcomer from Jersey City attended Packanack for the first time, got in doubles and a little bit of singles. He had so much fun and didn’t even eat Dwight’s great BBQ. He really came just for the tennis. I always say that this group is for tennis die-hards.

Lastly two players from Clifton and Livingston got to play with a former (Haverford) college player from Hoboken originally from PA for the first time. They said he’s really good and hope he will return. One called him superstar. I said he’s the ORIGINAL SUPERSTAR because I discovered him about 4 years ago and have always admired his sportsmanship as well as natural talent. Because I rarely see him this year, I took the opportunity to take a ton of pictures which kind of tell a story and showed them to the other players on his court. We were amazed that he was airborne for almost all of his shots: the serve, overheads and groundstrokes on both sides. The only thing missing was the volley where he dove or leaned rather than leaped into the air. No wonder he got so much oomph behind his shots, making him one of the all-time top player in the group. Though he’s a year older (27), he’ll still be around in the group for a long time! Before I go I’ve got to show a picture of him running back for a lob, airborne to hit the ball with his back to the court AND winning the point. How’s that for speed. As the players talked about their match with him, all three said HE IS QUICK. I think he’s SUPER QUICK 🙂
