Court Etiquette

Just a reminder, our parties provide a fun and relaxing atmosphere, where players can have friendly competition. We simply ask attendees to follow these guidelines:

1. Introduce yourself to the new players on the court. This will make for a more wholesome experience.

2. Be cordial to your partners and opponents.

3. Refrain from giving instructions to anyone on the court unless they request them.

4. Do not gun for the person at the net with fast and hard hitting especially in mixed doubles.

5. Kindly pick up the balls for the server. It saves time and is just good etiquette.

6. When yo leave the court, please find the 3 balls you played with and leave them for the next group of players.

7. Do not call a ball out when you or your partner are unsure about a line call. It is unsportsmanlike and can stir unpleasant reactions.
Check USTA or other tennis websites for the official rules.

8. If you are scheduled to play the next hour, do not take more than a 10-minute break. There are players who play only 2 hours and could use the complete playtime.

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | June 3 – 9, 2013

I’d like to share something I learned about tennis and life through my years of tennis and from people I’ve met along the way, particularly one player from Boonton who has played sports his whole life and is one of the top 5 players of the group. When I first met him in 2008 or 9, about 26 years old at the time, didn’t seem to care that there were other good players in the group…What I learned from the Boonton player is that while tennis important, the friendships he made were more so.

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | May 27 – June 2, 2013

We are so excited to have met a newcomer who’s attended the last 2 weeks. A perfect fit for the group, he has met so many people and even hung out with several of them at the end of the party. Upon request, he treated us to samples/staples of baked goods from his family bakery including flogera, kourabiedes, finikia and afali and of course baklava. Fourth generation baker, he makes the phyllo by hand which he uses for his savories and desserts. Immediately he hit it off with another player and he’s sure to go there during lunch or after work…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | May 20 – May 26, 2013

As the Hoboken player walked through the front door of Tiger Tennis, she noticed the salon and joked – “We can get our hair done and play tennis, killing 2 birds with one stone.” This youthful and joyful player loves to entertain herself and everyone around her…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | May 13 – May 19, 2013

During the warmer months, I get more opportunities to play. It’s really funny that newcomers who have never seen me play are surprised that I can actually hit the ball. As with any tennis players, sometimes you play like a super star and other times not at all. For me I can never trust myself to play well and I like to work myself into a match as a “fill in” whenever there’s an odd number…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | April 29 – May 5, 2013

A player returned from her weekend trip to England and probably didn’t have time to stop by the bank. As she was counting out quarters and dimes to pay me, the player from Budd Lake jokingly said – “I’d better pay you now before the quarters come!” and everyone burst into laughter…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | April 22 – 28, 2013

Thursday was an unusually quiet night. So I took advantage of it and got to play with 5 different players in the 2 hours. Everyone had fun playing and sharing a few laughs. My partner from Hoboken used the phrase “flies like a butterfly but stings like a bee” and the opponent from Budd Lake said that the shot was “packed with a lot of punch.”

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | April 15 – 21, 2013

While weeknight tennis is smaller group than the weekend parties, it gives me a chance to get to know players better. This Wednesday I got to watch players on the court play for a few minutes. Because I know everyone well enough, I started to cheer for the underdogs – “You almost got it!,” hoping that it wouldn’t offend the opponents…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | April 8 – 14, 2013

An avid player introduced a newcomer to the group last week and one more this week. I was more excited that the newcomer is a professor of psychology than a tennis player, feeding my interest in people and human psychology. A player from Guttenberg jokingly said I should be happy and I should set up an appointment with him. I kidded back – Well at least I won’t have to pay for the session if I can get him to come back to the parties…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | March 25 – 31, 2013

It’s that time of year, at the first sign of spring (though you couldn’t tell by the weather) when New Englanders have made it through the harshness of the winter and decided that it’s time to take vacation. While many went away, almost as many, or it seemed, flocked to the tennis parties for their mini getaways…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | March 18 – 24, 2013

Part of the party experience is meeting new friends. I was excited to introduced a Friday regular from Jersey City to a Saturday regular from NYC, thinking that they may have something in common. Immediately they started talking about their relatives living in other states. Although, as it turned out, they do not have relatives or friends in common, they talked for quite a while…
