Court Etiquette

Just a reminder, our parties provide a fun and relaxing atmosphere, where players can have friendly competition. We simply ask attendees to follow these guidelines:

1. Introduce yourself to the new players on the court. This will make for a more wholesome experience.

2. Be cordial to your partners and opponents.

3. Refrain from giving instructions to anyone on the court unless they request them.

4. Do not gun for the person at the net with fast and hard hitting especially in mixed doubles.

5. Kindly pick up the balls for the server. It saves time and is just good etiquette.

6. When yo leave the court, please find the 3 balls you played with and leave them for the next group of players.

7. Do not call a ball out when you or your partner are unsure about a line call. It is unsportsmanlike and can stir unpleasant reactions.
Check USTA or other tennis websites for the official rules.

8. If you are scheduled to play the next hour, do not take more than a 10-minute break. There are players who play only 2 hours and could use the complete playtime.

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | October 7 – 13, 2013

Last week we were able to get in our last tournament for the year. More players got a glimpse of what Tennis Buffs tournaments are like and will most likely join from the start of next summer. It was a good idea, a lot of fun and good learning experience. Not bad for the first-timer me!

Sometimes when you’re learning to play or you’re too good – you can’t find anyone to play with. But here I find players of similar level to gather the same night to meet for weekly tennis. The players that are too good – they’re in a league of their own since most of us can’t keep up with them. It’s nice that there’s a place for them and there’s genuine camaraderie among them…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | September 23 – 29, 2013

Sadly a couple of regulars, who had just moved to NYC from Edison just last year, are moving to Palo Alto, CA. They have become such an integral part of the group. I will miss them dearly. Maybe they will miss the hustle and bustle pace of the East Coast and return next year.

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | August 5 – 11, 2013

A player from Red Bank is visiting her grandparents’ native Italy at the end of the month. Jokingly I asked about the pinching. She said that it’s no longer true (I forgot why), although she and her sister spent many summers there growing up, but would walk against walls in the beginning. Their grandmother warded off the pinching men, who became afraid of this tough little old lady…

I made an announcement to the group that the Saturday party will be at a different location this week because the Korean Association is holding their annual tennis party at our home for the Saturday night party. Two Korean Americans joking said – “How come we weren’t invited?” and everyone burst out laughing. I said they don’t speak a word of Korean…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | July 8 – 14, 2013

Players from Budd Lake, Demarest, Jersey City and Rockaway must have had such a great time in the mixed doubles. Their match lasted 1 hour 45 minutes, with a few watermelon and iced tea breaks and a lot of high-fivings…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | June 24 – 30, 2013

I love hearing stories about how people play their hearts out. At the Packanack Lake Tournament 2 Saturdays ago, 2 players from Caldwell and Wayne (18 and 20 years old) played 6 matches straight and the other 8 matches with other people without breaks. The first thing they said to me when I arrived at the Friday party was – “We played this Wednesday and we couldn’t even swing our arms. We played like 1.0 [level]” Nonsense! They’re young and made of steel and they deserve to play until they drop…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | June 17 – 23, 2013

A player signed up for mixed doubles without a partner but I had one for her. She kidded – “Hot, young guy? And plays like Nadal?” I told her – “Hotter, younger and better.” She wittily replied – “Great, can’t wait! I obviously don’t know him then!”

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | June 10 – 16, 2013

Players from NY this week wanted to break their record last week. Last week there were 50% New Yorkers. This week there were 70%. As I watched the matches, I wondered why they don’t carpool. It must be that they ride the subway all week long and the chance to drive to suburban NJ sounds appealing…
