Court Etiquette

Just a reminder, our parties provide a fun and relaxing atmosphere, where players can have friendly competition. We simply ask attendees to follow these guidelines:

1. Introduce yourself to the new players on the court. This will make for a more wholesome experience.

2. Be cordial to your partners and opponents.

3. Refrain from giving instructions to anyone on the court unless they request them.

4. Do not gun for the person at the net with fast and hard hitting especially in mixed doubles.

5. Kindly pick up the balls for the server. It saves time and is just good etiquette.

6. When yo leave the court, please find the 3 balls you played with and leave them for the next group of players.

7. Do not call a ball out when you or your partner are unsure about a line call. It is unsportsmanlike and can stir unpleasant reactions.
Check USTA or other tennis websites for the official rules.

8. If you are scheduled to play the next hour, do not take more than a 10-minute break. There are players who play only 2 hours and could use the complete playtime.

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | December 23 – 29, 2013

Two friends from Florida and Cliffside Park accidentally found out about the group tonight and decided to attend. They didn’t realize that there was going to be a lot of tennis. When they wanted to leave after only 2 hours, I talked them into staying for another hour. After that I talked one into staying one more hour to complete a foursome. The Cliffside Park player sat out to wait for his friend. I introduced him to other players who were relaxing at the dinner table after their match. We found out that an interesting tid bit – he’s a transplant from Alaska, our first!

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | December 16 – 22, 2013

I haven’t heard of this expression before and thought I’d share. This one is for lovers of the English idioms. A player from Jersey City was telling the Ridgewood newcomer about how good a player my partner Dwight is. It is hard to believe now but when I first met him over 10 years ago, he had a six pack. I’m working on his getting it back. The Ridgewood newcomer said – “That’s a bridge too far,” because he’s in his mid 50’s, though I don’t think it’s impossible as long as I can keep on nudging him…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | December 9 – Dec 15, 2013

A player from West NY wasn’t sure if he could play tonight since he’s been busy with his now-6-month old baby. He managed to get in some tennis, playing with old and new friends, pre- and post-baby. He said he was glad he came. I asked why and he said “Cuz it was fun. Better than getting snowed in..”

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | November 25 – Dec 1, 2013

Years ago I brought my partner Dwight to play at my home court, the Binghamton Racquet Club. Almost the same time another player started playing there also. They bonded immediately and played together for years. Slowly this player started to drift away, though still playing but a different group. (They were smart to lure him their way.) We stayed in touch throughout our 10-12-year history and occasionally I ask him to attend my tennis events when there are players his level needing a fourth. As I watched him play tonight, I could see why the people in his community have elected him into various positions in their organization, including treasurer and more recently president – he’s just down to earth and always doing things to help others, genuinely a nice guy…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | November 18 – 24, 2013

There were a few newcomers this week. One said “I am excited and looking forward to a good dosage of Tennis. Just to make sure I am equipped well, I want to understand how things work at this meetup. Since this is a 8pm – 1 AM event, do people typically grab food and have dinner during a break?” I can tell you that he was nicely surprised to see ample food and refreshments but more importantly, he told me he really enjoyed the tennis. Nothing makes me happier to hear that!

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | November 4 – 10, 2013

Someone asked me where did all these players come from? They’re die-hards, who need their tennis fix or they end up climbing walls! It’s safe for me to say that I don’t need to recruit players, rather players look to play. It’s just something about tennis players that only tennis players know. Maybe it’s true with other sports…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | October 28 – Nov 3, 2013

Friday players started a trend, making their own buttons to represent themselves, e.g., Angry Bird, a Yankee, Skull and Cross Bones, etc. A player from Montclair arrived tonight with a button for herself, a Sunflower, and a button for her son, a transformer, I forget the name though. They were quite catchy, as other partygoers examined the buttons…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | October 21 – 27, 2013

The previous week a father came with his son who’s in his 20’s from Mahwah. He fit well in this group people of various ages. He has an all-star gym for kids ranging from 5 or 6 years old to 18 years old. It’s impressive that a young person is inspired to train other youngsters to achieve wonderful things that come with sports: health, confidence, friends, etc…

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | October 14 – 20, 2013

A newcomer from Tenafly was so happy that we started the Tenafly season and immediately signed up. A newcomer from Mahwah heard about the group through a player from Fort Lee attended for the first time tonight. He was so gracious to offer me a ride since we’re almost neighbors. The smooth ride made me feel like I was riding in a limo. A recent newcomer from Lyndhurst said he was “very excited to have found this group.” Young and energetic, he plays almost everyday, anywhere he can play. Kudos to him!

LAST WEEK’S RECAP | October 7 – 13, 2013

Last week we were able to get in our last tournament for the year. More players got a glimpse of what Tennis Buffs tournaments are like and will most likely join from the start of next summer. It was a good idea, a lot of fun and good learning experience. Not bad for the first-timer me!
